Are abs really that impressive?

I heard a famous Strength & Conditioning coach give his opinion about abs. I guess a lot of guys want to show off their abs in his gym and in gyms in general. He trains professional athletes and he said that they can train with their shirts off if they're over 200lbs and have abs. His opinion really made me think about this Ab-epidemic. Hell, homeless guys have abs too. Just because you have abs means jack squat. How does the rest of your body look like? Most guys should be worrying about putting on size and a base rather than doing ab exercises. Ab exercises don't make your abs pop if there's a layer of fat covering them. It's all diet son. Your abs will build via compound exercises like shoulder presses, squats, and deadlifts.

So if you start asking yourself whether or not you should do ab exercises maybe you should ask yourself "Did I get in a couple sets of Squats or Deadlifts today?"
